RIVERVIEW, Fla. — A Hillsborough County high school student died Sunday afternoon from injuries she sustained Saturday morning when she was hit by a vehicle.

  • Teen suffers fatal injuries in crash
  • Sky Taylor was riding skateboard when hit
  • Taylor a junior at Spoto High School in Riverview

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Sky Taylor was riding her skateboard just before 7 a.m. Saturday in a bicycle lane near South Gornto Lake Road and Providence Lakes Road when she was hit by a Volkswagen Passat driven by a 25-year-old woman.

Deputies said Taylor was on her way to work at a nearby Publix.

According to the report, the 17-year-old was wearing all dark clothing at the time of the accident, and the investigation shows that she was riding on the fog line, which separates the bicycle lane fron the other lanes of travel.  Deputies said the driver did not see Taylor, and struck her with the right front portion of her vehicle.

Taylor was transported to Tampa General Hospital with life-threatening injuries and she passed away around 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Taylor was a junior at Spoto High School in Riverview, and while school is out today, school officials say they plan to have crisis response counselors available on Tuesday.

Officials also said no charges have been filed for the driver at this time.
