ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Sunscreen Film Festival in St. Petersburg is showcasing more than a hundred independent films from all over the world.

About 600 films were submitted to be a part of this year's festival and 130 were selected. Out of those selected, one of them has a local connection behind it.

Actor Steven Sean Garland who lives in St. Pete stars in the film Fronteras which tackles the national controversy of borders.

Garland plays a Black Ops Patriot who helps stop drug smuggling from Mexico.

"His intentions are great. How he goes about his process are a little questionable," he said of his character.

It's a complex role Garland said he enjoyed playing.

The Bay Area movie star is excited about having the film shown so close to home.  Garland said he hopes the film helps movie-goers look beyond the lines that have divided the country.
