TAMPA, Fla. — A crowd of people gathered Thursday at the intersection of Bayshore Boulevard and Knights Avenue in Tampa to honor the mother and daughter killed while crossing that intersection one year ago.

RELATED STORIES:

On May 23, 2018, Tampa Police said Cameron Herrin and John Barrineau were street racing, reaching speeds of up to 100 mph. Herrin allegedly struck and killed Jessica Raubenolt, 24, and her daughter, Lilia, 21 months, as they tried to cross Bayshore.

Raubenolt's uncle, John Reisinger, said it has been devastating for their family.

"You know, if there was anything I could do to trade places with them I would," he said. "Our family misses these two angels tremendously."

On Thursday, a crowd gathered at the intersection to honor the victims.

They brought flowers, candles, and butterfly's sketches, and wrote messages in chalk on the sidewalk.

Some people in the group were family friends. Others didn't know Raubenolt at all but said they were touched by the tragedy.

"On a personal level they didn't know Jess, but they really are sharing the love and it's incredible to us," said Cathy Petre, a family friend.

Neighbors are also continuing to push for safety improvements along Bayshore.

"It's a problem, whether you're talking about cell phones or lack of courtesy on the roads or just lack of knowledge about how we can all get along together on the roads," said family friend Gary Petre.

Since the accident, changes have occurred. Some of them were already in the works before it happened.

The speed limit has been lowered and blinking pedestrian crosswalks have been added.

Neighbors said they'd like to see more done. They suggest speed camera and four-way stops.

Reisinger said he is encouraged by the changes that have been made.

"It's a good way to memorialize my niece and her daughter. I'm sure they're looking over this place and are appreciative of everything that's been done."

The case against Herrin and Barrineau is still making its way through the court system.
