ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A St. Petersburg man is behind bars Friday evening, charged with manslaughter in connection with the shooting death of his pregnant wife earlier in the day.

Kamion Kemarley Spencer was arrested at the couple's home on Trout Drive SE.

St. Petersburg Police said he called 911 about 10:40 a.m. Friday to report that his wife, Joi Spencer, had been shot.

The arrest affidavit said she was shot once in the chest but "without intent to murder."

Police declined to explain what happened, saying it's still early in the investigation.

"Obviously, anytime someone is a victim of gun violence it is a tragic occurrence," said Sgt. Michael Demark.

Doctors delivered the woman's baby at the hospital. At last check, he was in critical condition at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital.

Neighbors said they saw Joi Spencer out taking walks occasionally and they never noticed any trouble at the house.

"I introduced myself to her. She was very nice. She said 'It's always good to know your neighbors,'" said Robert Foster. "To me they came off as a young couple that were trying to start a family."

Police said Spencer they recovered a handgun at the scene, and noted that Kamion Spencer didn't appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

According to jail records, he is scheduled to make a first court appearance Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m.
