VALRICO, Fla. — A woman was rescued from her burning home Monday night during a 2-alarm house fire in Valrico.

According to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, the fire broke out at 8:20 p.m. at a home in the 4000 block of Highgate Drive. When firefighters arrived, flames were shooting through the roof of the back of the home. 

When crews arrived, the male homeowner told them his wife had went back inside to retrieve medication and had not come out. Firefighters ran into the home to find zero visibility inside.

Crews heard the woman screaming and were able to locate her in a back bedroom. Crews carried her outside where she received immediate medical attention and she was transported to an area hospital with smoke-related injuries.

Firefighters continued to attack the fire outside, eventually calling for a second alarm. With most of the flames coming from the attic, the crews were eventually able to bring the flames under control in about 45 minutes. 

There were no other injuries and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
