LAKELAND, Fla. — The double murder trial of Cheyanne Jessie in Polk County is now in the hands of the jury.

She is the Lakeland mom accused of killing her father, Mark Weekly, and 6-year-old daughter Meredith in 2015.

The defense rested its case Tuesday morning. The prosecution and defense then presented their final arguments to the jury.

Prosecutor Paul Wallace told the jury about all the physical evidence in the case and that they should find Jessie guilty of two counts of first-degree murder.

"What do you think is in her mind when she takes the gun and puts it to the back of her daughter's head and pulls the trigger, and when she takes that knife and stabs in the back of the neck those four times," said Wallace. "All she's thinking about is what she wants to happen."

Defense attorney Debra Tuomey, meanwhile, attempted to cast doubt in the minds of the jurors. She said Jessie's former boyfriend should be the one on trial.

"Are you convinced? Are you sure? Or are you wavering or vacillating? Going back and forth in your mind to what did and didn't happen?" she said.

The jury deliberated for about an hour Tuesday afternoon before they told judge Jalal Harb that they would like to go home for the day.

They are expected to resume deliberations on Wednesday morning.
