The center is located at St. Petersburg College’s Midtown Campus.

“We’re able to connect them with other resources and let them know that ‘hey, it’s ok,’ and there is a light at the end of the tunnel and we’ll be there every step of the way,” said Jonita Lewis, the Community Resource Director at RCS Express Center.

Since opening on June 17, nearly 70 people have utilized the center so far. While it’s located on campus, anyone is welcome to use it. A photo ID and social security card are required.

Lewis helps people gather food from the pantry there and learn about resources available to help them. She also assists people with writing resumes and finding jobs.

“I want to do everything in my power to help them put that fire out so that way they can continue with their education, because education is the key to be successful,” said Lewis.

She knows firsthand what it’s like to need some help. Twelve years ago, she was homeless and RCS assisted her and her family.

“Fast forward 12 years later, here I am. Back with the same organization that has helped me and my family,” said Lewis.

On Thursday, RCS Pinellas held a press conference to announce the community partnerships behind the new center.

“This food pantry is not only for our students — it’s for our community, which is near and dear to us,” said Dr. Tonjua Williams, President of St. Petersburg College.

The RCS Express Center is located at 1048 22nd Street South, St. Petersburg, FL 33712 in Room 102 and is open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
