HOLIDAY, Fla. — Residents in Holiday are pushing county leaders to repave Sunray Drive.

The road has been busted up from the weight of county trucks.  The road itself is narrow and is not designed for large trucks.

"It's a matter of safety at this point. People can not walk on the sidewalk and they can not walk in the road.  It's just all broken up and it's a dangerous thing because kids are in school now," said resident Tom Tursi. "I can tell you, going down this road, you take your 80,000-pound garbage truck going down this road, and somebody walking down the sidewalk, you can literally watch the people run for the grass because the truck is just two yards from the road."

Several neighbors say they are at their wit's end.

"We call the County Commissioners on a weekly basis.  And all you do is... Oh, we'll transfer you to this person or to that person. The people will be out to fix the potholes.  It's beyond potholes.  The street is literally crumbling and they will not fix anything properly," resident Herb Algire said.

It's not just the road damage residents are concerned about, drainage is also an issue.

Many of the residents have groundwater collecting on their property.

"This water runs into the street and they're literally pumping it out of their backyard, constantly into the street here.  And it just runs 24-7 and it's groundwater.  It's not like there's something flooded. Its just water they're pumping out of their yard," Algire said.

It's brackish water so the smell isn't great. And with the road constantly wet and broken there's no stopping the potholes.

The county recently repaved part of Sunray Drive they considered to be a collector road, which is east of U.S. 19.

Residents are being asked to pay for the repairs for the other portion of the road, which is west of 19, up and beyond their taxes. And residents say repaving isn't going to fix the issue. The property drainage needs to be addressed first before any repairs to the road are going to last.
