MULBERRY, Fla. — Two people died overnight after a fire swept through their Mulberry home.

  • 2 people dead after Mulberry fire
  • Fire broke out in home in 4000 block of Willis Road
  • People rescued from burning home, later died at area hospital

According to Polk County Fire Rescue, a 911 call came in just after midnight about a home in the 4000 block of Willis Road being engulfed in flames, mostly to the back of the home.

A neighbor told arriving firefighters that two elderly people were still inside.

Fire officials said firefighters went into the home while it was still burning. The front door would not open so crews went in through a window and managed to pull 86-year-old Carl Caldwell and his wife, 80-year-old Denise Caldwell, from the home.

The Caldwells, who both had significant injuries, were transported to Bartow Regional Medical Center, where they both died.

The State Fire Marshal will investigate the cause of the fire. The Medical Examiner will determine their exact causes of death. Preliminarily nothing at the scene appears to be suspicious.
