HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. — The May Stringer House, home to the Hernando Heritage Museum in Brooksville and built in the mid-1800s, may have graves buried on the property, workers there say.

“We know that there were four people who were buried close to or even a little bit farther away from the house," said Autumn Resch, the May String House docent. "The original parcel was 160 acres, so it's pretty big."

And the house does have a reputation for the paranormal — staff conduct ghost tours on select nights.

"I think almost every one of the docents here have had some sort of weird experience," Resch said.

Resch said that one night, when she and the curator were cleaning up after a Halloween event, they found one of their cleaning products in the doctor's office — but neither had gone in there.

Workers are now hoping to use the same ground-penetrating radar technology used to find the 145 graves on the property of King High School in Tampa to search for potential graves. But they need help acquiring the tech.

"We're a volunteer organization, you know. There's nobody on the payroll here, so we really don't have the funds to get something that extravagant right now," Resch said.

Museum workers hope the community will come together to help them uncover another part of Hernando County's history.
