ELLENTON, Fla. - It's a rare sight to see five World War II veterans living in the same city.

In the Colony Cove community in Ellenton, five World War II veterans are all living in the same neighborhood.

That's just one of the reasons that neighbors spent nearly two years working to raise enough money to create a veterans monument at the center of the community. Groups of residents put on fundraisers, dances, sold items, and went to local businesses asking for donations. After months of plugging away, they had racked up more than $30,000 to have a black marble monument made. It represents all five branches of the military and sits beside a large American flag.

It's become a gathering spot for many in the community including Dominic Arsi, Robert Porter, Charles Price, Paul Burgbacher, and Jordan Pokrinchak, the group of World War II veterans that call Colony Cove home.

"I'll tell you the first time I saw it I got chills. I think it's the greatest thing." Arsi said.

The group of veterans all have very different stories to tell. Charles Price flew in 62 wartime missions. Paul Burgbacher was a prisoner of war for 16 months.

"The Lord looked after me though, that's all I can say," Burgbacher said.

The monument is not just for them, but for all veterans who served and have retired to live in Colony Cove.
