TAMPA, Fla. — Puerto Rican aid organizations in Tampa are planning to send donations to help residents affected by the earthquakes, but they're not doing so just yet.

Controversy surrounded the aftermath of Hurricane Maria and where donations ended up.

That's why local groups aren't taking action just yet.

Instead, they took the last couple of days to strategize.

“There was a lot of groups, well meaning, that picked up a lot of supplies and just sent them to the island and overwhelmed the system and didn’t really consider the distribution and how, who was going to receive it and how they were going to receive it,” said Eliseo Santana of Puerto Rico Connect.

This time, organizations are going to narrow it down, only working with people on the island they've worked with in the past.

In the coming days they'll have a better idea of what kind of donations will be most effective.

“We will continue to control it ourselves. More hands brings trouble; less hands bring effectiveness and productivity in what we’re wanting to do,” said Ana Rivera of Band Aid for Puerto Rico.
