NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. — A 104-year old veteran in Pasco County is about to receive a big honor: a Congressional Gold Medal.

It is for his service in the Philippines during World War II.

Liban Brillantes was born in the Philippines. At 19, he joined the 121st Infantry to fight against the Japanese occupation there in World War II.

He left life as a farmer and was trained by the U.S. Army. He delivered secret messages among other duties, including combat.

Decades later, he is getting recognized for that service.

"I am so happy, thankful, and honored," Brillantes said in an interview.

The Congressional Gold Medal is one of the highest honors a citizen can receive. It started during the American Revolution and has been given out since to those with "distinguished achievements and contributions," according to the U.S. House website.

Brillantes moved to the United States in 2004 and became a citizen. He lives with his daughter in New Port Richey.

The veteran will be honored on Saturday, along with another WWII vet, Thomas Janocko, at Faith Baptist Church in New Port Richey at 2:00.

U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis will be there for the presentation.
