Authorities said the incident happened at U.S. Highway 27 and Davenport Boulevard shortly before 10 a.m.

Haines City Police Chief Jim Elensky said when he arrived on the scene, his officers were performing CPR on the worker, identified as 49-year-old Martin Loera of Bartow.

"Throughout the interview session, we learned that the subject may have been on top of the truss area, and according to witnesses there were some sounds of popping noises," said Elensky. "This person fell down and what it appears is that he was struck by the wall and struck his head on the concrete floor."

According to firefighters, the wind caught trusses on the wall and caused it to fall over.

Loera was transported in critical condition to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Elensky said there were less than a dozen workers on the site at the time of the accident. The workers were in the process of building a strip mall.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is at the scene and will investigate the incident.
