BRADENTON, Fla. — Priscilla the Mastodon, who usually greets visitors as they enter the Great Hall at The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature, is lonesome.

So are her caretakers, who miss having people at the musuem.

The Great Hall was the setting for some of the museum’s Facebook Live talks after they closed to guests in March, but before the early April call for non-essential workers to stay home.

“Other times we’ve done really interesting videos with a little tiny piece of fossil or some sea shells,” said Remi Gonzalez, Director Communications and Brand at The Bishop, “so we literally have thousands of objects in the museum and each one has their own stories to tell.”

And before non-essential staff left, The Bishop was able to use their time closed to the public to catalog some of their donated items.

“So that when people do come back, they will see some new objects,” said Gonzalez. “Our education staff will be able to show people some new fossils, new seashells.”

For now, museums are relying on their social media channels to reach their patrons. (Check out the Bishop's Manatee Moment of Zen!)

Of course, all animal caretakers remain at the museum.

“My hope is that when all this is behind us, that we will all remember how important it is to take time to reconnect with each other,” said Gonzalez.
