He splits his time between Central Florida and Puerto Rico.

But in mid-March, he stopped going home as the pandemic spread. He was reluctant to expose them to his high-risk job.

Spectrum News sat down with Velasco at the Advent Health Sebring emergency department, and before his shift, he talked about his life now in the time of coronavirus.

Although losing patients to coronavirus remains difficult to accept, he believes he is right where he needs to be.

“And I think my team is doing good — is doing great. I think one of the best things we are maintaining our composure is education - be updated with everything that’s coming out.”

Velasco hopes to go home for a visit in the summer.

He encourages everyone to begin embracing a new normal of masks, social distancing and no large gatherings.

He says this could last a year or longer.
