HERNANDO BEACH, Fla. — A mother in Hernando County who lost her son over a year ago is honoring his memory by working to keep others safe on the water.

Dana Foland's son, CJ, drowned in January 2019. In his memory, Foland started "Swim for CJ," an organization that seeks to educate about water safety and provide scholarships for swim lessons.

"Swim for CJ" will also now be overseeing a new life jacket loaner station on Hernando Beach. Here's a few things to know about this new effort:

  • The life jackets at the stations are free to use
  • Jackets come in five sizes from infant to adult
  • Users are asked to drop jackets they are finished with in a bucket at the station so they can be properly cleaned to prevent the spread of coronavirus
  • The Sea Tow Foundation covered the cost of the new life jackets for the station
