Organizers announced the decision on Thursday, citing "the level of uncertainty and lack of clear guidance from experts" as factors prompting the decision, as well as a desire to protect the health and safety of the community.

St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman said he was saddened by the need to cancel but also that he respected the decision and organizers' focus on public safety. He also expressed hope that he and community members could find other ways to recognize and celebrate Pride Month this year.

"Working with St Pete Pride and other organizations and individuals in our community, we will find ways to celebrate this year’s pride month safely and collectively," Kriseman said in a statement. "I hope that all residents of St. Pete remember that while we may be separated due to COVID-19, we are never alone and that we should continue to embrace and celebrate our LGBTQ residents and allies every day for their efforts in helping the sun to shine so brightly on us here in St. Pete."

Organizers reported record numbers in attendance for last year's events, with an estimated 250,000 people taking part over the three-day event.

The event was originally scheduled for June 27-28.
