Sanitize your car.

Buckle your seat belt.

Adjust your mirrors and your mask.

It's the way of the road during a road test in the coronavirus pandemic.

"We’re wearing a mask during every single test, no exceptions," said Paul Trippy, Operations Director at All Florida Safety Institute Driving School.

Trippy and other instructors at the private driving school encourage students to wear masks, too.

All Florida Safety Institute is hitting record numbers in terms of road tests at their locations across the state.

"Previous to Covid, we were probably doing about 15 to 20 road skills a day," Trippy explained. "Right now, we are doing about 100 or little more each day.”

More people are heading to private schools because counties like Pinellas have suspended road tests at their locations.

But that will change this summer, according to Pinellas County Tax Collector Charles W. Thomas.

Enclosed driving ranges are under construction where remote driving tests will be conducted.

"A new driver will need to come with a licensed adult 21 years of age or older and they will be with them in the automobile as we conduct the test remotely observing it on the range,” said Thomas. “We would use a cell phone or a tablet to be able to converse with the driver and the adult passenger in the car with the person taking the test to give direction."

Pinellas County hopes to begin the remote testing at its North county location in June and its South county location in August at the latest.

Meanwhile, new drivers don't have to wait — they can still reach out to third party providers.
