CLEARWATER, Fla. — Two people on Clearwater Beach were struck by lightning Sunday afternoon as storms rolled into the area, according to public safety officials.

Authorities say Gacek Arkadiusz, 37, of Des Plaines, Illinois, and Sav Keomany, 43, of Pickerington, Ohio, were leaving the part of the beach near Somerset Street around 2:15 p.m. when they were struck by lightning “halfway between the water line and the dunes.”

When Clearwater Fire Rescue and Clearwater Police crews responded to the scene, one of them victims was reportedly not breathing, and an officer had to administer CPR until a lifeguard could take over with medical treatment.

They were both transported to Morton Plant Hospital. Arkadiusz is in critical condition, while Keomany is in stable condition.
