But it’s the atmosphere that the Tampa Downtown Partnership hopes people have an appetite for.

“As people get out and about, it’s a great place to gather,” said Linda Remund, president and CEO of the Tampa Downtown Partnership.

Remund is talking about Tampa’s newest gathering spot - The Square at Lykes Gaslight Park.

“This park has basically been a pass-through park, and just to go from one end of downtown to the other, and we just really wanted to activate it. It’s right in the middle of our urban core, so it’s a perfect spot to just bring people together,” said Remund.

With 40 tables and chairs, a concession stand, space for live music, and WiFi connection, this 90-day pilot program aims to check all the boxes one could want in Tampa’s downtown.

“I think this is an innovative way to bring people together but still stay socially distanced apart from one another,” said Frank Crum, an employee in downtown Tampa, as he bought a snack at the concession stand.

But before this pop-up can become permanent, people are asked to scan the QR codes around the park to offer some honest feedback.

“It’s the people’s park really. The park isn’t owned by anybody. It’s really for everybody to enjoy. So we want to make sure that it’s something everybody wants to come to,” said Remund.

And after the 90 days, they will take those suggestions into consideration when pitching a permanent installation to the city.

The park will be open for breakfast and lunch until around June.

It will then be open for lunch and dinner until mid-July when the pilot is complete.
