There’s a poetry contest underway to pay tribute to Florida’s third largest city, Tampa.

All month long, local artists have been putting their thoughts to verse and describing what the city of Tampa means to them.

Tampa’s official Wordsmith Gianna Russo came up with the idea. She has an entire book of poetry that’s dedicated to the city.

“This is our National Poetry Month challenge,” Russo said. “We’re asking everybody in the city who wants to write a poem in celebration of Tampa. It’s a way for us to come together and celebrate the city.”

Russo will select the winners of the challenge by the end of May.

Their poems could eventually be featured in public art projects throughout Tampa.

The deadline to submit a poem is midnight Friday, April 23.
