SANFORD, Fla. — Breweries continue to pop up across the state of Florida, making them popular hangouts for locals and tourists alike. But have you ever thought about what it would take to brew your very own concoctions?

What You Need To Know

  • The Sanford Brew Shop was originally designed to help people brew their own beer

  • Two men decided to brew their own beer and create a taproom

  • They still teach others how to brew at home as well

Two men in Sanford are answering that question inside their brew shop. In this week’s Florida on a Tankful, Spectrum News explores the world of brewing beer, and how you can start your own home brewing experience.

Mixing and measuring just the right amount is key if you’re going to concoct the perfect brew. That’s something Gary Holmes has learned over the years through trial and error.

This includes learning to brew beers at home and now teaching others at the Sanford Brew Shop that he co-owns with his business partner Aaron Libera.

The shop itself started off as just a shop that sold parts to brew your own beer at home, but the pair has now transformed the space into a taproom and a spot where Holmes and Libera teach the art behind home brewing.

While they had both been brewing together out of their homes for a number of years, it wasn’t until friends and the general public encouraged them to open a shop when they finally got the business rolling. Originally running a small operation out of Hollerbach’s Deli, they eventually grew and were able to purchase their own spot next door in December 2012.

Since then, after a decade in the business, they’re still thriving and continuing to grow their shop while they teach a new generation of home brewers the tricks of the trade.

So come try your hand with two guys who love to not just brew their unique beers, but teach all who walk through their door how to do it, too.
