As young families remain in a desperate search for baby formula, preschools and nurseries are desperately searching too.

What You Need To Know

  • There is a national baby formula shortage

  • Parents have to travel long distances in order to find what is available

  • A local preschool is helping its parents find formula

“I found four cans a couple weeks ago," said Dr. Christina Lombardi-Davis, director of the Learning Empowered Academy at St. Marks. “Another one of my teachers found four cans at Publix a couple of weeks ago. Again, as we see it we’re stocking it."

“Formula is expensive as it is, and throwing in the cost of gas is also skyrocketing," she added. "It's very sad."

Learning Empowered is sharing what they can find with their parents despite the shortage. This mission helps people like the Almeres family, who have been going from store to store only to find signs explaining the empty shelves.

Two small gifts of formula from the preschool go a long way for their family, which is why Learning Empowered and the Early Learning Coalition of Pinellas County are holding formula drives to help more young families keep their babies fed.

“Like if you see something, say something,"  Lombardi-Davis said. "If you see formula, grab it.”
