LARGO, Fla. — Students are on summer break but school districts are already working towards the fall.

Protecting school teachers and students against violence is the focus of a Pinellas County School Board meeting Tuesday.

  • Pinellas County Schools has applied for $700,000

The district is looking to get funding from the U.S. Department of Justice to improve safety.

Pinellas County Schools has applied for $700,000 in federal money so they can complete their own threat assessment for school violence.

In April of this year, the DOJ made applications for that funding available under the stop school violence threat assessment and technology reporting program.

If Pinellas County Schools get those funds, it would help them improve school safety by finding and addressing threats and developing mental health intervention teams to identify school violence risks.

If the funds are awarded to the school district, they will provide coordinators to assist with redeveloping the districts threat assessment process.

Those coordinators will also develop and manage trainings and technical assistance to the school district's administrators and staff.
