TAMPA BAY, Fla. — Some Bay area school systems have announced makeup days for time missed because of Ian and Nicole.

The Hillsborough County school district cut its winter break by one day. Students are now scheduled to return to classes on Jan. 9, which was already a teacher planning day.

In Pinellas County, schools will be open on Monday, March 20, 2023 to make-up for instructional time lost due to Hurricane Nicole. The district closed schools for one day on November 10 due to the storm. Schools also closed for four days in September due to Hurricane Ian but the district did not need to make up the instructional time.

The Pasco County school district already scheduled two makeup days after Ian. It will not add more because of Nicole. Instead, the administration is tweaking daily bell schedules to account for the lost minutes.

In Polk County, seniors have to attend the last day of school with the rest of the campus. That will be May 17.

"The state requires all public school students to have a minimum number of instructional hours each year," the Polk school system said. "If PCPS seniors were to end the year as originally planned on May 16, they would not meet the state’s requirement."

In Citrus County, the last two half days before winter break will now be full days of school. Those dates will be Dec. 21 and Dec. 22.

And in Hernando County, two early release days (Dec. 14 and Dec. 15) are now extended to be full days.
