TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa City Council responded to Mayor Jane Castor’s veto of proposed city charter amendments during a lively meeting Thursday morning.

The council voted to override the mayor’s veto.

Earlier this month, the council approved asking voters to decide on five changes to the city charter. But in a Tampa Bay Times’ opinion piece, Castor wrote that the council’s process was “rushed and haphazard.”

Earlier this month, the council approved asking voters to decide on five changes to the city charter. But in a Tampa Bay Times’ opinion piece, Castor wrote that the council’s process was “rushed and haphazard.”

Some council members responding by saying the public should be able to choose whether to accept the amendments.

During the meeting, some members were clearly upset with how Castor handled the veto. Some of the public comments from people attending the meeting were animated as well.

Countering the mayor’s thoughts, council members said they held four hearings about the changing of the charter.

Proposed changes to the charter include the mayor’s power to appoint a lawyer for the oversight committee, citizens review board and that the council must approve appointments made by the mayor.

Castor, who is attending a mayors’ conference in Washington, D.C., has not responded yet.
