A new museum dedicated to the history of the American West is now open in St. Petersburg.

From cowboys to Indians and everything in between, you can find it depicted at the James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art.

All of its works were collected by the James family, who were captivated by western culture after seeing the area in their travels.

"It all started over 50 years ago when the James' were collecting together -- even in college when they were dating," Curator of Art Emily Kapes said.

"I think Tom James really loved cowboys and Indians as a child, and playing that game, going to western movies and just the inspiration of the west frontier stories, Native American history and meeting so many of these artists," she added.

And the detail in some of the artwork is pretty impressive.

"This is unusual because it's painted you really see a lot of detail," Kapes said said of one work.

"It's so intricate you just can't help but be amazed," she added.

A total of 500 works of art are laid out across 30,000 square feet at the museum, so there is sure to be something that appeals to everyone.

As the name suggests, the museum isn't all about the West. There's a section full of beautiful depictions of animals in their natural landscape.

The museum hopes to be not just a gallery, but a gathering place for people to come together and learn about an area and people they may not know much about.

"We're going to have a lot of artist programming here we're going to have summer camps," Kapes said.

The museum is now open to the public daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be a grand opening celebration on April 28.
