  • UCF and Miami hold steady in the AP Top 25 as the only Florida teams in the top 25
  • USF received 14 votes for the poll after a come-from-behind win Saturday
  • Alabama received a season-high 58 of 61 first-place votes

The Knights rose from No. 18 to No. 16 in the poll after their game against the North Carolina Tar Heels was canceled with Hurricane Florence making landfall in the state. UCF received a boost too thanks to Boise State's loss to No. 15 Oklahoma State. The Broncos were ranked ahead of the Knights and fell out of the top 25. The top-ranked team outside the power five conferences -- the ACC, SEC, Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac-12 -- gets an automatic berth in a New Years Six bowl game. The Broncos had the inside track to that position, especially if they had defeated the Cowboys.

BYU is the next ranked non-power team, entering the poll at No. 25 thanks to an upset road victory over No. 18 Wisconsin.

The Knights are next in action Friday against FAU at Spectrum Stadium in Orlando.

The Miami Hurricanes held steady at No. 21 following a blowout victory at Toledo on Saturday. Miami plays FIU on Saturday in its next game.

USF received 14 votes following a come-from-behind victory over Illinois at Soldier Field in Chicago on Saturday. The Bulls are ranked just ahead of the Texas Longhorns, following Texas' upset win over USC at home.

The Alabama Crimson Tide held steady as the top team, receiving a season-high 58 of the 61 votes in the poll. The Clemson Tigers received the other three, but are ranked No. 3. Georgia is ranked No. 2.

LSU surged to No. 6 in The Associated Press college football poll after its second victory of September against a highly ranked team, and Wisconsin tumbled to No. 18 after becoming the first top-10 team to be upset by an unranked team.

LSU has now gone from No. 25 to start the season to No. 6 in three weeks.

The Tigers beat Miami, the preseason No. 8, in Week 1 in Arlington, Texas, and then knocked off Auburn on Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Auburn slipped from No. 7 to No. 9.

Three teams moved into the ranking for the first time this season, with Boston College making its return to the Top 25 for the first time since 2008.

The Eagles beat Wake Forest on Thursday night to improve to 3-0 behind a dynamic offense led by running back A.J. Dillon and blossoming quarterback Anthony Brown. BC has not won more than seven games since 2009. The 2008 team won nine and the ACC Atlantic Division but was last ranked on Nov. 30 of that year.

No. 22 Texas A&M is ranked for the first time since November 2016.

Next week's action will feature two games of ranked teams. No. 22 Texas A&M takes on No.1 Alabama and No. 7 Stanford visits No. 20 Oregon.
