TAMPA, Florida — The latest defensive meltdown was the last one for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The team announced Monday it has fired defensive coordinator Mike Smith.

After Sunday's 34-29 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, the team ranks last in the NFL in passing yards allowed per game.

They have also allowed 34.6 6 points per game, which also ranks last.

"I have the utmost respect for Mike Smith as a man and as a football coach," said head coach Dirk Koetter. "These decisions are always difficult, but our top priority here is to ensure that we do everything possible to help this team succeed."

Smith, who used to coach the Atlanta Falcons, was in his third season in Tampa.
