UCF’s first recruiting class under Josh Heupel is in the books, as the Knight’s first-year head coach pulled in 19 total between the two signing periods. Wednesday’s main focus was strengthening the defense.

Josh Heupel, the former Missouri offensive coordinator, wouldn’t give a grade on his first recruiting class and says he doesn’t pay attention to the rankings online but said he loved that he was able to add size and girth to the roster.

“Adding the speed to the secondary with some length to give us ability to run man-to-man coverage and make competitive plays,” Heupel said of his class.  “[We got] Guys that attack the football and then guys that can go after the quarterback and disrupt things up front and create negative plays so excited to what we added to the defensive side of the ball.”

UCF is still looking to recruit another quarterback, after Noah Vedral decided to transfer to Nebraska last month.  But they did pick up an offensive speedster from Texas in 3-star receiver Ke’von Ahmad.

“We were able to add speed and playmaking ability on the outside,” Heupel said of adding Ahmad. “He’s a 10.4 track guy as a junior, has abilities to go make plays down the field and I think he was a 1600-yard receiver this year.”

The team is expected to add a few others but Wednesday Heupel would not disclose how many scholarship spots are still available. Right now seven of the 19 signees are already on campus, as the team will start full spring workouts on Monday.

UCF also picked up a few Orlando area walk-ons, with Jones High School quarterback Quadry Jones, Bishop Moore RB Trilion Coles and East River WR Nykie Marion all joining the program.  Two former Central Florida standouts transferred to UCF as well, as the Knights have welcomed WR Tre Nixon (Viera) and DE Jonathon MacCollister (Bishop Moore) into the fold.
