TAMPA, Florida — Is the problem at a major Tampa intersection one of bad design, signal timing or just rude drivers?

That's what Real Time Traffic Expert Chuck Henson was asked to find out in this week's Traffic Inbox.

A viewer named Lisa sent us this email: "Northbound cars on Harney (Road) back up 25 plus cars deep at the light waiting to cross Hillsborough Avenue.  Two-three cars will ride in the southbound Harney lane to reach the left turn lane."

The problem is those cars don't have the intention to turn left. They jump in the turn lane, then speed ahead of the through traffic when the light changes.

"I've encountered a couple of close calls of being sideswiped by these impatient, crazy drivers," Lisa said.

Jimmy Fields runs a car detail shop on the corner and said morning traffic is bad.

"In the morning, the traffic is all the way, maybe 700, 800 feet back, you know, coming off of Harney Road," Fields said.

On the southbound side, those who don't want to wait for the light use his business as a cut through.

"Because you have trucks, semis and everything coming through here. And I park my vehicle here to stop some of the traffic coming through here as well," Fields said.

There are two issues here. The state is responsible for Hillsborough Avenue and the signals at the intersection. Crews have looked at it and said the signal and it's operating as intended. Monitoring of the area will continue.

The county will have to reach out to the Sheriff's Office regarding enforcement issues with improper lane use and cutting through the detail shop's property.
