PASCO COUNTY, Fla. — There is a stretch of highway in Pasco County that is known for backups, especially during the morning commute.

But a fix is already in the works.

The stretch is about four miles, from the Suncoast Parkway to U.S. 41 along State Road 52 in Pasco County.

It is part of Mary Grey's route to and from work, and a decade ago it would have taken her about 20 minutes to make her daily commute.

"Now with the traffic on 52, the way it is now, 40, 45 minutes," Grey said.

The area has grown a lot, but other than the interchange with the Suncoast Parkway, State Road 52 has not.

And a big chunk of that traffic is heavy trucks.

Grey said if there's a crash, getting around the area is nearly as bad as sitting in the traffic.

"From where I live on 52 you either have to go down the expressway and come down 54, which you know that's a nightmare also, or to go north to County Line Road and to come down," she said.

The problem is capacity. There is simply way more traffic using the road than the road can handle.

"I don't understand why we don't just continue to have three lanes that whole way, or even two lanes, because I think that would relieve a lot of the traffic," Grey said.

For answers, Real Time Traffic Expert Chuck Henson went to Kris Carson with the Florida Department of Transportation.

The intersection of U.S. 41 and State Road 52 is very busy, so the state does what it can here to give as much green time to everyone. Ultimately a rebuild is the answer and that is on the books.

"This project will widen SR 52 from the Suncoast Parkway to East of U.S. 41 to a six-lane divided road," Carson said. "In addition to the widening, a 12-foot multi-use trail will be built along the north side of SR 52."

The project is already funded and in design. Construction should begin this fall.
