PALM HARBOR, Fla. - Parents of students at a Pinellas County elementary school are asking for more room on a nearby road.

What You Need To Know

Alyce Berg assists with the drop off and pick up of her grandchild at Cypress Woods Elementary School in Palm Harbor.

Before making that first trip, she got some friendly advice from a family member.

"My daughter-in-law warned me about this drop off and pick up line, and so when I witnessed it first-hand I just saw how dangerous it was,” Berg said.

The spot is northbound McMullen Booth Road as it becomes East Lake Road, past where it crosses Tampa Road. The speed limits according to Alyce are 50 miles per hour, and the school sits just a bit past there at Cypress Woods Boulevard.

The lot at the school can't contain all of the traffic at peak times, so it spills out onto East Lake Road.

While there is a dedicated turn lane for the school, it's also not long enough, so that same traffic backs up into the northbound right lane.

"My only option is to pray that nobody hits me from behind and I start a chain reaction or I pull off onto the shoulder," Berg said.

She is also concerned about a crash like that sending a car onto the nearby sidewalk, packed with kids right after school.

To remedy this, she said the answer seems easy enough.

"Add some more turning lane,” Berg said. “Maybe make a double turning lane off just to move the traffic off of East Lake Woodlands to get it over here into Cypress Woods Boulevard, which is a much quieter street."

Tom Washburn, manager of Pinellas County Traffic Engineering, said this spot has been on his mind too.

During a recent repaving of the roadway, extending that lane was discussed.

“Unfortunately there are drainage structures and other utilities that would need to be relocated that we were not able to address as part of that project,” Washburn said.

So right now, a new comprehensive review is underway, and this issue will be included in that study.
