BROOKSVILLE (Bay News 9) -- A new medical clinic in Brooksville is reaching out to the uninsured in Hernando County.
The Crescent Community Clinic, which is funded by a group of Muslim doctors, is giving medical care to the uninsured for free.
Mary Caraccia has been battling skin cancer for half of her life. She discovered a lump in her throat, but she doesn't have any medical insurance.
"I don't make enough money to pay for it," she said. "If I pay for that, I don't have anything at all."
Alex Galvan is the executive director of the clinic. He says giving back to the community in a positive way is simply part of the Islamic religion.
"This is very dear to our hearts, and it's one of the five pillars of Islam -- to give into charity," Galvan said.
Currently the clinic is only open Saturdays, but the doctors hope to eventually expand their hours.
There will be an open house Aug. 30 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The clinic is located at 656 South Broad St. in Brooksville.
"Nobody really understands what their situation is in life, and we're not here to judge them for that," Galvan said. "We're here to see them for the person they are. A human's life is worth a lot more than what they have in their pocket book."
