Scouring for scallops in Citrus County

CITRUS COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- To many people, the first week of July means fireworks but to others, it's the first week of scallop season.

Thousands flock to Citrus County every summer to scour for scallops.

It's open harvest from the Pasco/Hernando county line up to Mexico Beach in the Panhandle. Researchers say it's going to be a good year.

The scallops nestle right in the sea grass, so you have to know what you're looking for.

"When you go down and you find one scallop, usually if you stay down there for a little while, you look around, you'll find about five or more in that area," said scalloper Taylor Thomas

It takes more than a mask and snorkel to go scalloping.

A saltwater fishing license is required and there are limits to how many scallops you can gather. Also, there is no scalloping allowed south of the Hernando-Pasco county line.
