A 20-year-old Lutz man was killed Wednesday morning when a driver turned in front of his motorcycle, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Darren R. Derby, 20, was riding a Suzuki GSX-R600 west in the inside lane of County Road 54 around 7:05 a.m. Kayla Lancaster, 22, of Wesley Chapel was driving a 2001 Mazda 2 east on the road and had stopped in the left turn lane approaching Oakley Boulevard.

Troopers said Lancaster waited for a westbound van to pass through the intersection, then began to turn left and drove into the path of the motorcycle.

The motorcycle struck the right side of the vehicle, ejecting Derby. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Charges against Lancaster are pending, troopers said.
