A 29-year-old woman was killed early Friday when she drove the wrong way on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and crashed into another vehicle. 

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Shontel Nicole Chase of New Port Richey died at the scene when she drove her 2005 Ford 4-door sedan northbound in the in the southbound lanes and collided nearly head on with a 2000 GMC pick-up truck. 

The crash happened just before 4 a.m. on the Manatee County side of the bridge. The crash thwarted southbound I-275 traffic out of Pinellas County throughout the morning.

The 55-year-old male driver of the pick-up had to be extricated out of the crashed truck. He was transported to an area hospital in stable condition. 

Troopers said they have spoken to at least two witnesses to the crash but are still investigating how the woman drove the wrong way on the bridge.

The southbound lanes were re-opened just after 9 a.m.
