BELLEAIR BLUFFS, Fla. — Florida ranks almost at the bottom of the list when it comes to funding programs for the disabled.

But one woman is hoping to change that, one job at a time.

Jane Williams, with her husband Bill, is the co-founder of The Banyan Odyssey, which tries to create a vibrant community in which the handi-capable can live, work, and thrive.

It started about 4 years ago after Jane searched for a program for her daughter, Mary Elisabeth, who is developmentally disabled.

"You can't limit their potential at a certain time because you've seen our young people. They're still growing and learning and developing," she said. "It's a life-long process."

Jane said she learned that Florida ranks almost last in the country in funding provided for programs for the disabled.

And she is quick to point out while Florida's unemployment rate is about three to four percent, the disabled but capable unemployment and under employment rate in the state is 85 percent.

With her young charges being trained for work in the hospitality field, Jane has a goal of purchasing and running a beach hotel where the handi-capable can work and make their contribution to the community.

"We would love people who have knowledge in the business areas that will help make the hotel a reality to join with us, and let us know if you're interested in helping," she said.
