Renee Dermott was the focus of a story we aired July 17 as the community rallied around her.

Dermott taught at Seven Springs Middle School.

Her social media post earlier this month inspired friend and fellow teacher Tanya Murphy to start a fundraiser for her as a show of support.

The past school year, Dermott taught Murphy’s son.

“All the kids adore her,” Murphy said. “She’s lots of fun. She’s high energy. She’s kind of got that goofy thing going on that kids can relate to.”

Murphy said the community came together quickly and reached their initial goal.

The Florida Department of Health Sunday reported 12,478 new coronavirus cases in Florida, along with 87 new statewide deaths. There were also 339 new hospitalized cases statwide.
