1. Rick Kriseman endorses Ken Welch in race for St Petersburg mayor
St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman, in a speech outside City Hall, said former Pinellas County commissioner Ken Welch is "a uniter" and is the best-prepared of the eight candidates running to succeed him in the mayoral primary on Aug. 24.

2. Tampa Bay Times: Hillsborough superintendent did not violate ethics rules, attorneys say
A report prepared by investigators hired by the Hillsborough County School Board said superintendent Addison Davis did not act improperly when he recommended a multimillion-dollar curriculum purchase and, later, cut teaching staff to balance the budget.

3. How Blue Origin's Jeff Bezos will soar into space
On Tuesday's debut flight, the passengers will be company founder Jeff Bezos, his brother, an 82-year-old aviation pioneer and a teenage tourist. The capsule on Blue Origin, which has completed 15 test flights since 2015 without humans, is automated and does not require a pilot.

4. Seaside Seabird Sanctuary caring for birds sick from red tide
Dozens of birds sickened by red tide were among the 300 brought to the Seaside Seabird Sanctuary in June, according to Christina Chilbert, sanctuary development manager. Brown pelicans and cormorants have been most affected, she said. Sanctuary officials say sick birds stumble around and may have glazed-over eyes. They say sick birds must be treated as soon as possible. 

5. Court: Some veterans may be eligible for additional benefits
Veterans with multiple periods of service who qualify for both the Montgomery G.I. Bill and the Post 9/11 Bill are eligible to draw from each if the U.S. Court of Appeals ruling is upheld. It's a decision that many Tampa Bay area veterans had been hoping for. Previously, the practice was considered "double-dipping" by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs.

6. Pasco takes a swing at world's fastest-growing sport
Team USA will face Spain next month in the International Padel Cup at the Sarah Vande Berg Tennis Center in Zephyrhills. The facility is hosting the tournament in a game described as a combination of tennis, squash, and racquetball and played on a court that has walls on two sides. The event will be held August 20-22.

A Florida man who breached the U.S. Senate chamber carrying a Trump campaign flag was sentenced Monday to eight months behind bars, the first resolution for a felony case in the Capitol insurrection. 

Paul Allard Hodgkins apologized and said he was ashamed of his actions on Jan 6. Speaking calmly from a prepared text, he described being caught up in the euphoria as he walked down Washington’s most famous avenue, then followed a crowd of hundreds up Capitol Hill and into the Capitol building.
