Investigators believe texting may be to blame for a deadly crash near the Gandy Bridge.

Manuel Bonet Jr., 29, was killed in the crash, which happened at about 8 p.m. Tuesday on Gandy Boulevard in St. Petersburg.

The Florida Highway Patrol said Bonet was driving at a high rate of speed when he drifted off the road and onto the center grass median, then overcorrected and drove off the other side of the road, where he crashed into a power pole.

Bonet was thrown from the vehicle. He died at the scene of the crash.

According to Bay News 9's partner paper, the Tampa Bay Times, while an exact cause of the crash has not been determined, a cell phone found at the scene showed Bonet may have been texting at the time of the crash.
