Dozens of people turned out this past weekend to check out a new way to adopt animals in Citrus County.

Citrus County Animal Services launched its new mobile adoption unit this past weekend with a kick-off event at the new Walmart in Lecanto.

Officials said a total of seven animals - two cats and five dogs - were adopted out from the bus.

An additional seven animals were adopted from the shelter in Inverness.

According to Bay News 9's partner paper, the Citrus County Chronicle, the mobile adoption unit is housed in a bus that was once managed by Citrus County Transit.

The bus is now being used to take shelter animals to community events in hopes of increasing the numbers of pets adopted out and limiting the use of euthanasia in the shelter.

The mobile adoption unit will be at the 2nd Annual Best Friend Fest on Saturday, Feb. 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  The event will happen at the Citrus County Auditorium in Inverness.  For more information, visit citruscritters.com.
