A Hernando County detention deputy pulled a man from a burning vehicle after a crash last Friday, authorities said.

According to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, deputy Bobby Stalvey was headed to the Manatee County Detention Center to pick up a truckload of food supplies.

About 8:45 a.m., while driving south on I-75 in Hillsborough County, Stalvey saw a white Chevy Trailblazer leave the highway, crash into a guardrail, bounce off the guardrail and turn onto its passenger side.

Stalvey crossed I-75 to assist the driver, while other drivers also stopped to help.

As Stalvey approached the sports utility vehicle, he saw the undercarriage on fire, authorities said. Stalvey then jumped onto the driver's side of the Trailblazer and determined that the driver was the only occupant, and he was trying to free himself.

With the help of two citizens, Stalvey pulled a 6-foot, 250-pound driver out of the vehicle.

Stalvey is being recognized by the sheriff's office for placing himself in harm's way to help a citizen in need.
