A Dunedin couple and their dog made it out of a burning RV safely.

The RV caught fire on I-275 northbound just past the Himes entrance ramp.

Fire crews arrived on scene shortly after to find an RV with heavy smoke and fire coming from the rear portion of the vehicle.

Les Caroll and his wife Mary were heading to Meritt Island with their dog Molly when they caught wind of the fire.

“We had just got all of our groceries and we both said we smell something burning. We thought it might be outside. But then somebody said you’re on fire!” said Mary Caroll.

Les Caroll got his wife Mary and their dog Molly out of the RV just before the flames started to spread.

"We had just filled it up with gas, and it’s a big gas tank. We knew something bad was gonna happen," said Mary Caroll.

The family said they tried to get all their valuables out before it went up in flames, but they know they got lucky.

"I'm glad nobody got hurt out there," said Mary Caroll. "I’m glad it didn’t explode and hurt us or anyone else."

The RV is a complete loss.

FHP shut down all northbound lanes of I-275 at the Himes entrance for approximately 15 minutes as crews extinguished the fire.

The fire is under investigation. The cause is still unknown at this time.
