Brevard County residents are mourning the loss of a longtime Melbourne lawmaker who died unexpectedly Saturday.

Melbourne Council member Harry Goode Jr. collapsed inside his home Saturday night and died.

He was 75 years old.

Goode served two terms as mayor and 14 years as a member of the Florida House of Representatives.

“We are totally shocked and numb about Harry’s passing,” said Melbourne Mayor Kathy Meehan said. “He was a great person, a great mayor at one time, twice, and a great legislator.”

“He was well known by everybody, yes, very outgoing, I think just a great politician out for the people, always trying to better Melbourne and things of that nature,” said Goode’s nephew, Richard Goode.

Goode’s family, who were some of the first settlers of Melbourne, has been operating Harry Goode’s Outdoor Shop for more than six decades.

Meehan said she’ll be meeting with the city manager and city attorney Monday morning.

The council has 30 days to appoint a new council member for District 3.

Funeral arraignments are pending.
