The day was originally commemorated by Northerners after the Civil War who wanted to honor fallen Union soldiers. In 1868, General John A. Logan issued a proclamation that the day be observed nationwide and annually.
Southerners refused to celebrate the day for several years, and so they continued to commemorate the fallen Confederate soldiers with their own holiday, called the Confederate Memorial Day.
