A death investigation is underway after a well known New Port Richey man's body was discovered on a boat in Port Richey early Monday morning.

Police said the man, later identified as 48-year-old Craig Carmichael, was found on a boat that had been anchored over a sand bar about a mile from shore near Durney Key.  Officials started looking for him after receiving a call about an overdue vessel, and they found his boat at 4:30 a.m.

The boat was brought to the ramp near Nick's Park, just off of U.S. 19, where investigators processed it and collected evidence.

At this time, police said they do not suspect foul play, but the exact cause of death won't be released until after an autopsy is performed.

Carmichael was well-known and active in the New Port Richey community. He was the organizer of the city's annual holiday boat parade on the Cotee River and was an outspoken supporter of renovating the historic Hacienda Hotel.
