Two Polk County men were killed in a three-vehicle crash on U.S. 17-92 in Davenport late Friday, authorities said.

The crash happened just before midnight near South Boulevard. One of the men who died, 36-year-old Douglas Brate of Lake Wales, was driving a 2007 Toyota Camry north and either tried to pass or got too close to a 2012 Chevy Cruze, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

The Camry struck the rear of the Cruze and veered into the southbound lane, where it collided head-on with a 2003 Dodge minivan. A passenger in the minivan, Melvin Jaramillo of Haines City, was killed, authorities said.

Jaramillo is between 25 and 27 years old and was wearing a seatbelt, according to the accident report.

The minivan's driver, 24-year-old Alexandra Arellano of Haines City, was taken to Heart of Florida Hospital, where she is listed in good condition. She also was wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the Cruze, 21-year-old Nicole Beaumont of Haines City, was not injured. Three passengers in the Cruze - two adults and a baby - also were not injured. All were properly restrained, the sheriff's office said.

The roads in the area were shut down for about five hours.
