The family of a man who was shot by Pasco County deputies protested his death on Sunday.
Despite the rain, Jerry Brown’s friends and family marched at Zephyr Park on Sunday in protest of the shooting last Tuesday.
Deputies say they were forced to open fire because Brown would not show his hands during an undercover drug deal. Brown’s family says there was no need to use what they believe was excessive force.
"We want the truth to come out," said cousin Cedric McKay. "They shouldn't have got him that many times, an unarmed man? Why?"
The Pasco County Sheriff's Office admits Brown did not have guns on him at the scene, but say they were concerned because of Brown's criminal history.
"When you are dealing with drugs, as you can see in our county, you are dealing with a very violent individual,” said Sheriff Chris Nocco. “This suspect was arrested for kidnapping, two armed robberies and now we have him for drug trafficking."
Friends and family say Brown was a changed man.
"He has changed, people change," said friend Spenser Sellars. "You can't hold him by his past."
"My brother has been involved in stuff but he is not a violent person at all," said brother Jackie Brown.
Both the sheriff's office and state attorney’s office are investigating the shooting.
